This old izakaya first opened 1926 and is a favorite among locals. It is conveniently located at a 10 minute walk from Minami Senju Station. Once you get there and settle in, it is fascinating to watch the owner operate at the highest level of efficiency and with such grace. The paper menu attached to the wall displays an abundance of different dishes which typically include fresh oysters (available individually), grilled fried-tofu rolled with green onion and dried bonito, gingko nuts, smelt, croquettes, and other traditional izakaya dishes. In addition they also offer western style dishes such as cheese and pasta. My favorite dish is 'Shime-saba' (vinegar marinated mackerel) which is so delicious that I typically order it twice and enjoy it together with sake. The dishes are simple, traditional and accordingly well-prepared and affordable. Bottom line, it is a great iizakaya that you can visit with ease even if you are not a local.
