Kotaro, a Japanese style pub “izakaya”, in Shibuya, is a select spot for grownups in a neighborhood that is predominantly for younger people. All the dishes are excellent. The selection of nihonshu (Japanese sake) from the nine breweries that the owner has carefully picked as his exclusive providers is well worth exploring. Start with some delicious appetizers and a variety of sake, as the izakaya staff tell you stories about the breweries. Due to the popularity of Kotaro, the wait list for reservations can be one month long; otherwise this place is perfect. Menu items include potato salad with smoked egg, gratin with scallops and crab, and minced pork cutlet that is juicy without being greasy. These are all familiar izakaya dishes, but the chef's original twist makes them unique and very tasty. He also makes his own very special udon noodles.
